G- Charmonique Watt (8.3 ppg, 1.7 rpg, 1.0 spg)

Last year when these two teams met the Retrievers walked away with a one point win. But that was in the RAC. While it is not a far drive at all, the women’s basketball team still has major problems on the road. Last season they lost by over 20.0 ppg and this season they lost their first road game by 22 points. While Michelle Kurowski is at the cusp of breaking out to that star level, and Carlee Cassidy is already there, the duo has to get things done on the road. It seems that when one has a good night the other struggled and if they both do well the rest of the team struggles. That has to stop and the entire team has to come together to get that much needed road win. So far this year Towson lost a game to Big East powerhouse West Virginia, but have solid home wins against Winthrop and North Carolina A&T since.

If UMBC wants to even their record this is a good opportunity. Towson is a decent team but not a team they are outmatched by in any stretch of the imagination. But they have to learn to win on the road and again, this is a good chance to get one.

Women’s Basketball vs. St. Joseph’s Preview

Probable Starters:

UMBC (1-1):
C- Topé Obajolu (7.5 ppg, 3.5 rpg, .583 FG%)
F- Meghan Colabella (12.5 ppg, 11.0 rpg, 2.0 bpg)
G- Carlee Cassidy (13.5 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 3.0 apg)
G- Michelle Kurowski (21.5 ppg, 10.5 rpg, .560 FG%)
G- Katie Brooks (3.5 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 4.5 apg)

Key Reserves:
F- Chrissy Robinson (4.5 ppg, 1.5 rpg, 1.000 FG%)
F- Erin Brown (12.0 ppg, 5.5 rpg, .625 FG%)
G- Michele Brokans (1.0 ppg, 2.0 rpg, 1.0 apg)

St. Joseph’s (0-2):
C- Ashley Logue (2.5 ppg, 1.5 rpg, 1.0 spg)
F- Dominique Bryant (2.5 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 1.0 spg)
G- Mariame Djouara (9.0 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 1.5 spg)
G- Amy Gillespie (10.0 ppg, 2.0 rpg, 1.5 spg)
G- Ashley Prim (4.5 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 2.0 apg)

Key Reserves:
F- Brittany Ford (13.5 ppg, 6.5 rpg, .429 FG%)
G- Katie Kuester (3.0 ppg, 1.5 rpg, 1.5 spg)
G- Michelle Baker (3.5 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 1.5 spg)
G- Shelby Smith (7.0 ppg, 1.0 rpg, 2.0 apg)

The women’s basketball team may have looked good in their first two games this year, but tomorrow they will be taking a big challenge, their first road game of the season. While it may not seem that hard since St. Joseph’s is 0-2 and have struggled to score this season, UMBC lost by an average of 20.0 ppg on the road last year, even against poor teams. St. Joseph’s may be off to a bad start but they are better than an 0-2 record suggest. But expect road improvement. Michelle Kurowski and Carlee Cassidy may be the toughest 1-2 punch at this level of basketball while Meghan Colabella has been unstoppable in the first two games.

Women’s Basketball Routs UMES 102-65 in Record Breaking Day

leave a comment »

Either those “talented” transfers at UMES are not very talented of UMBC is really good. Based off their game against Virginia I’m going to say UMBC is really good.

They set many record. It was the most points while at the Division I level (102), most points in a half (59 in the second), tied for most three’s (14), most assists (28), and largest margin of victory since 1991.

Michelle Kurowski led all players in both points and rebounds with a double-double (22 points and 14 rebounds). She went 7-12 from the field and 4-5 from three point range. She came up just three assists away from a triple-double with seven.

Meghan Colabella is certainly having a fine start to the season as she had another double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds while also recording three blocks. She went 5-8 from the field and 4-6 from three point range.

Three other Retrievers recorded in double-digits. Carlee Cassidy recorded 18 points, going 6-10 from the field and 4-7 from three-point range.

Erin Brown came off the bench to provide a good boost with 13 points and Topé Obajolu recorded 11 points with five rebounds.

Three other Retrievers scored in the game, Chrissy Robinson scored a career high nine points and Chelsea Barker and point guard Katie Brooks scored seven. Brooks also had a fine game with just six assists and five rebounds with only three turnovers.
