It was two unlikely heroes that came up big for UMBC to break a half time deficit and walk away with a win. Topé Obajolu recorded a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds, and Chelsea Barker was tied for a team high in points with 15 to go with five rebounds in the game.

Cassidy’s Last Second Lay-up Lifts UMBC Past Towson, 74-72

leave a comment »

It was almost a guaranteed overtime situation for the Retrievers as Towson broke their four point led with under 30 seconds to go and the game tied at 72 with just six second left.

After a half court inbound in Michelle Brokans, who them made her way into the paint, Phil Stern called an immediate time out with nearly no time take off the clock, leaving UMBC with a few ticks of the clock to get one shot off.

Women’s Basketball Routs UMES 102-65 in Record Breaking Day

leave a comment »

Either those “talented” transfers at UMES are not very talented of UMBC is really good. Based off their game against Virginia I’m going to say UMBC is really good.

They set many record. It was the most points while at the Division I level (102), most points in a half (59 in the second), tied for most three’s (14), most assists (28), and largest margin of victory since 1991.

Michelle Kurowski led all players in both points and rebounds with a double-double (22 points and 14 rebounds). She went 7-12 from the field and 4-5 from three point range. She came up just three assists away from a triple-double with seven.

Meghan Colabella is certainly having a fine start to the season as she had another double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds while also recording three blocks. She went 5-8 from the field and 4-6 from three point range.

Three other Retrievers recorded in double-digits. Carlee Cassidy recorded 18 points, going 6-10 from the field and 4-7 from three-point range.

Erin Brown came off the bench to provide a good boost with 13 points and Topé Obajolu recorded 11 points with five rebounds.

Three other Retrievers scored in the game, Chrissy Robinson scored a career high nine points and Chelsea Barker and point guard Katie Brooks scored seven. Brooks also had a fine game with just six assists and five rebounds with only three turnovers.

Cassidy Scores 33, but Tough Defense Shuts Down Retrievers, Lose to Boston U 87-57

leave a comment »

The Story of the season for women’s basketball: good offensive potential but strong defenses shut it down with ease. Boston U has one of the best defenses in the conference and doesn’t have to score well, but they forced 23 turnovers and capitalized on it, turning then into points. Only six retrievers scored, three scored over five.

Carlee Cassidy has a fine game with 33 points and Meghan Colebella got back into the starting lineup and had a near double-double with 11 points and 8 rebounds. Other than them though the offense was shutdown. Michelle Kurowski was helf to six point while Chelsea Barker, Melissa Book, and Tope Obajolu were held to a combined seven points.

The difference was simply turnovers. Boston U scored 28 points off turnovers and just simply kept the UMBC offense hesitant and unable to make plays.
