Stand Up, Cheer, Be a Real Student/Fan Section

with one comment

Even thought I was sitting at the press table watching the game and taking notes on Tuesday I couldn’t help but notice the student section two feet away from me during the game. For the entire first half the crowd was silent and sitting. The real student section was in the upper level of the arena. They were standing. They were yelling. They were being real fans.

I don’t know how many times I can preach this message: the basketball team feeds off the energy of the crowd. I know some people don’t believe that and it’s just about talent, but if you’re playing in front of a bunch of people watching you and cheering for you at the top of their lungs, you don’t want to look bad in front of them.

If a team is playing against a team that has fans cheering and yelling at the top of their lungs, they may get distracted on a play and make a big mistake which could be the difference in the game.

For one, it was a televised game. What kind of image does that give for UMBC that a basketball game has a student section that is sitting down? A bad one.

Follow these three rules when you’re at a basketball game:

1) Wear Black and Gold
—Seriously people were wearing red and black in that cheering section. If you know there is a basketball game and you think their may be a chance that you could go, put a black or gold shirt in your car so you can throw it on before the game. Stop wearing what ever color you’re wearing that day…wear your team’s colors. Or better yet, pain yourself black or gold.

2) Stand
—Why are you sitting at a basketball game? This isn’t an Oriole game or Ravens game where people pay $200 for a club level seat to be able to sit their with a beer and chat with their friends while watching a game. There is no rule saying you have to sit. In fact, there should be a rule saying you have to stand. The camera was rolling on Tuesday and got an absolutely lame crowd representing UMBC.

3) Cheer
—The only thing more useless than a sitting section is a quiet section. Why do you go to a game and be quiet. When the game is over my ears should be ringing for a few hours because it is so loud. I shouldn’t be able to hear everything Randy Monroe is telling the team from across the court. Yell, stomp your feet, whistle, make noise. This is college, act like college students.

Here is a great video of what I’m talking about. I absolutely hate everything about Duke but I have to admit, they have great fans. listen to how loud they are. If there is somebody who isn’t wearing blue or white point him out. If there is a person sitting, again point him out.

Come on fans, the team may not be as talented as Duke but there is no reason the fans can’t be as crazy as theirs.

  1. Unfortunately, the people who read this bog are probably not the ones who were sitting 😦
