Cassidy’s Last Second Lay-up Lifts UMBC Past Towson, 74-72

It was almost a guaranteed overtime situation for the Retrievers as Towson broke their four point led with under 30 seconds to go and the game tied at 72 with just six second left.

After a half court inbound in Michelle Brokans, who them made her way into the paint, Phil Stern called an immediate time out with nearly no time take off the clock, leaving UMBC with a few ticks of the clock to get one shot off.

With Brokans looking for a player to inbound to, despite being double covered she made a great pass to Cassidy who with just one second left made a hook shot under the basket to give UMBC the 74-72 win as Towson had virtually no time left to get a shot off.

Despite giving up the late lead, it was a good win for UMBC. They were threatened by a chance of a potential loss (anything can happen in overtime) and their superstar stepped up and made a play when the team needed. But it is also a win on the road. While it was only a 30 minute bus trip up I-95, the team has still struggled on the road no matter how close the games were. But this time, instead of losing by 20 points, they won by two to even their record at 2-2.

Four Retrievers scored in double-digits in the game. While Cassidy hit the game winner to give her 15 points, Meghan Colabella and Erin Brown (off the bench) led the team with 16 points each while they both grabbed five rebounds. Twleve of Brown’s points came from the three point arc where she shot 4-6.

For the second time this season however Michelle Kurowski recorded a double-double. She netted 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the win against Towson.

Four other Retrievers scored in the game. Topé Obajolu scored five while fellow starter Katie Brooks score four with five assists.  Assisting Brown off the bench where Brokans and Chelsea Barker who each scored two points.
