Men’s Soccer vs. Hartford Preview

leave a comment »

On wednesday at 3:30 the men’s team will have their home conference openner hosting the 5-3-2 Hartford Hawks who beat New Hampshire 1-0.  Hartford is hot having won four of their last five games but UMBC has had their number in the past goin 4-1-2 and outscoring the Hawks 13-5 in those seven meetings.

Carlos Villa who has 20 points and nine goals on the season might be the only true scoring threat they have and if the defense can limit his opportunities UMBC could come up with a win at home to start their conference season 1-0-1.

The problem with UMBC right now is they are playing inconsistent.  The offense has not porduced much lately, averagin under 1.5 goals per game on the season.  If the defense and Steve King play well in goal then the team should win but if they slip up any the offense has to find a guy who can score.  The one consistent scoring threat has been Andrew Bulls (five goals on the season) and lately Dustin Dzwonkowski has stepped up and has been playing great as a new starter.  The key to it all though is if Kevin Gnatiko can match the performance he had against Maine, which may have been his best outing of the season, now that he is almost 100% healed from a leg injury suffered over the summer.
